A Debs Dress With A Difference

I loved my debs (the Irish equivalent to the prom), but sometimes I wish I had been slightly more daring in my choice of outfit. I didn't start looking for months in advance as most girls do, and any time looked at a price tag of over €100 I would drop it immediately... I don't know why, my mam would have bought it for me anyway! I just have a problem spending so much money on something I will only wear a few times. On a wedding dress, fine, but a debs? Not so much.

Anyway, I found a dress one day that I loved, and after leaving it a while to see if it would go on sale (praying it wouldn't disappear), it did, and that was that.  Let me tell you, if it weren't for my sister's superior eyesight I would never have found the dress in my size that had been hiding on me for weeks, the cheeky little minx.

So, this post is aimed at finding affordable, gorgeous, and slightly different dresses, so that you can stand out from the crowd of girls all dressed in varying shades of black and cream satin (I was one of them.... *sigh*). If you're good, I'll even include a picture of my own debs dress from 2 years ago, but you have to behave! Now, let's get to it (oo er)..

I decided to look for debs dresses on... well, non debs dress sites. All you get there are your typical debs dresses that we've all seen before, yawn. Variations of floor length satin gowns with different cut outs and diamonte embellishments, but essentially the same. These tend to be more expensive, so off to the high streets of online shopping we go!
£15 (!!)
Yes, for 15 pounds you can't expect quality, but this is all just to get you thinking outside the box people! A strapless debs dress is hardly ground breaking (although mine was one of the few at my own debs), but the sequined body and floral skirt make this an altogether more exciting ensemble.

Ok so this one is slightly over the budget I would aim for at €230 but dear lord, LOOK at the thing. I want. I need. I crave. The silhouette isn't one you often see on the average debutant. I love the sleeves, they make this dress special.

For the more demure among us, I give you this beautiful piece:

Awear, €64
You don't often see navy in amongst the dresses hung carefully on padded hangers in the typical evening dress shop. Certainly not amongst your peers when you actually arrive at the debs (unless of course, navy is on trend, in which case half the girls will turn up wearing the same colour as your good self).
I do love the flower detailing as well, it's big but not in your face.

If even floor length is to cliche for some of you, or simply too girly, there are plenty of short evening dresses that easily rise to the occasion.
Asos, €108
Asos, €160
If you can't decide between short or long, why not go in between? God knows the midi skirt is bang on trend, and it means you can still feel formal without tripping over the ends of your dress (mine has a few holes along the hem by now!). I love the boyish feel of the black dress, but I think it's still very appropriate for a debs. Who says you have to conform? :P

And finally, the dress I wish I'd worn to my debs!

Ok so I couldn't find the exact one I wanted but something along these lines :) The retro design is exactly what I love, and can you imagine dancing around in it? That's the thing about floor length dresses, they just aren't really made for twirling.

And, just cos you've been lovely, here is a picture of my own debs dress (which was lovely too, in it's own way)

I can't believe that was almost two years ago now... Weeeird. So, there you go, a few debs dresses to get you thinking. Don't be afraid to stand out from the rest of them, I mean, that's what we WANT right? :D

Wednesday Wants - Week One

Right so here it goes, the first series on my blog... Series sounds funny, as if it's a tv show or something. But hey ho, that's what it's called apparently!

So this is just going to be a list of things i reeeeally want. I'm constantly seeing things and putting them on a mental list to get (or not get, just dream about... sigh). So now I have a... well, real list. So, week one, here we gooooo :D

I am probably the last girl on earth to realise you can buy things off Asos with your laser card. The revelation made me giddy so I immediately went through the entire website, a website I have ignored up until now merely because I thought I could never use it. And that, my friends, is when I found these....

Now, you may not agree, and that is fine, but to me these are heaven in boot form. Yes, they cost 121 euro (down from 190) but they are PERFECT. I have a thing about boots, but I only buy them in good quality, slouchy leather, and only if they are just right. These, my friends, are more than just right..

I think. You see, they haven't arrived yet but I was so excited I wanted to tell the world anyway. So they could end up being not quite as I expect. But I don't think that will happen. I shall love them anyway, no matter what way they are, like a mother loves a slightly odd child...

This post is getting into weirdo territory here so I'm going to end my boot gushings here.

Here's something else I've been lusting after lately..

Nikon D3000 (nomnomnom)

Happy Wednesday :D

❝Cowgirl King of the Rodeo, Let the Good Times Roll❞

On Friday night I went to a party. Not just any old party, a party in barn (officially called the piggery). :D 'Yeah yeah' you may be thinking, 'you live in Ireland, surely that's the norm.' Well... not in Blackrock, Co. Dublin it isn't. The only reason it's still there is because it's owned by an artist who uses it as a studio. The party is held every year at the beginning of summer, and all the neighbours are invited along with everyone and anyone! Ryan Tubridy even made an appearance.

The walls were hung with the artist's paintings, both finished and unfinished, and fairy lights were strung between the beams of the roof... Old films were projected onto a cloth screen on a wall above the band, although I did spend most of the night transfixed by the silent action above than the music down below! The floor was filled with mismatched tables, chairs and sofas, with a space left for dancing. And in the corner? A makeshift bar with free beer. (I'm not a beer drinker myself but I could understand my friends' excitement when they saw it).

The whole night felt like we were on the set of a Bulmers ad, it was gorgeous!

The band: Hot Chicken

RGF, Jane and Luke (oh and a Conor on the side)

I meant to get a picture of my outfit but my camera died, but it was just a floral Topshop corset, skinny jeans and high cowboy boots (I figured they fit the setting :P ).

Can't wait till next year :)

❝The leading cause of death among fashion models is falling through street grates.❞

I found this quote by Dave Barry, an American writer and it made me think. Weight and appearance is something that is always in the back of my mind, as I'm sure it is with most other people. We simply can't escape it! Everywhere you turn there are people telling you (albeit indirectly, in the form of magazines, advertisements etc) that you must be this size, this tall, and own so and so. Now, the question of owning things which are so called 'must haves' has never really been a problem for me. In fact, I generally shy away from the things everyone wants to buy, out of some silly principle I think.

But how and ever, it is the general size issue that tends to get me! I know it shouldn't, I have nothing to be ashamed of about my body. Don't get me wrong, I'm hardly what is considered 'skinny' but I am still small enough that I can trick people into thinking I am underneath my clothes... Or at least I was up until recently, the fact that my mother cannot keep me in biscuits suggests I may be getting a bit podgy during these summer months :P

I like most of my body, I like my legs for example, and my (usually) clear skin. What gets me down is that ONE thing that never is and never was a part that I liked... my tummy. I know I'm not alone in this, whenever I talk to my friends about exercising, our main priority is a toned stomach. I go through phases where I don't think about it, and then (more often) beating myself up about it but not having the will power to sort it out! (weaning yourself off bourbon creams is quite hard after all, as I'm sure you all know).

It has gotten to the stage where I just don't feel comfortable or confident in some of my clothes, I wear oversized shirts just so I don't walk around holding my breath. It's ridiculous! And of course I know what is to blame, as many people have discussed until they are blue in the face, the media. I don't read many magazines, but when I do I just end up staring at the models and feeling a bit...down. Although if I see one that is unhealthy looking I really am just a bit grossed out... I mean, I'm not a fan of the skeletal look if I'm honest. Is anyone? But usually it's just these really gorgeous, nice looking girls with lovely stomachs (that's always the bit I get hung up on). I guess they don't have the same diet of biscuits and bagels as I do, huh?

But I find that this kind of thing is leaking into my everyday life. The majority of my friends are boys, and for some of them, girls are the only thing they talk about. They point out who they think is good looking, and when I look over I can see that she has, by far, a better body than me. Even my boyfriend does it occasionally, not about girls in the street, but celebrities, (which I obviously do too... I have a crush on the current Doctor Who and I'm not ashamed to admit it). This still gets me down though and more than anything I am annoyed at myself! Annoyed that it should bother me so much, and ashamed of my own insecurities.

So I have made a plan. Instead of hanging around feeling sorry for myself, I am going to do something about it. Not to conform, I have no need of that, but to feel better about myself. I'm not going to lose weight, just tone up and feel proud of myself :D I have made many a plan in the past to achieve this but this time I have a partner in crime, my friend Jane, and we are going to do this together! Though she has absolutely no need of it if you ask me :P This may seem like I am simply breaking under the pressure, but the truth is, if I am unhappy, why should I not make some effort to change that? I'm not one for following a crowd in general. I'm doing this for me, because I want to, and on top of that, it might make me a healthier person. All those biscuits just CAN'T be doing anything good now can they?

... I realise now that as I am writing this, I am currently planning on baking buns with the aforementioned Jane... Sure, it's GRAND, we'll start tomorrow, promise!

Things I Want To Do This Summer... hopefully.

I have let almost 2 months of summer holidays go by and so far achieved nothing! So I decided to write down a list to see if it helps.. plus I just LOVE lists.

I have a job at a summer camp for kids to come learn English, starting in July. The job requires you to live there with 2 nights at home a week, so my plans have to fit around this but I think I can manage! We don't start work until one in the afternoon so I have the whole morning free, as long as I get up (which didn't really happen last year...).

So here is the beginning of an ever expanding to-do list!

✄Buy a dslr camera, and learn to use it
✄Start making jewelry again
✄Learn how to play guitar (other than that one Paolo Nutini song!)
✄Write a song or two
✄Learn to drive
✄Will my hair to grow faster
✄Save my money!
✄Start exercising (inc jogging... well, we'll see)
✄Draw more
✄Read more books
✄ Participate in the Ultimate Blog Challenge (If you have a blog
check it out, it looks hard but it'll be fun :D )

and probably a lot more that I can't think of right now.... I'll let you know how it goes anway :P

You Sound Like You're From LANDAANNN - My week in pictures!

The one sunny day we had in London!

One of the hundreds of checked flannel shirts the RGF tried on in Camden market...
at least he bought one of them!

The wedding in the forest.. :)

Quick outfit picture after the wedding.
Dress: Oasis, jacket and headband - Primark, rings and bracelets - H&M

Over all a very nice week, though I didn't do as much shopping as I had hoped! Most of my money went on food and the tube (I spent so much time walking around underground that eventually I began to feel a bit like a mole...)

The wedding was gorgeous, and a bit like Four Weddings And A Funeral which I loved, though it did hail!

Come Fly With Me.. 8 Tips For Packing Light!

Hopefully that plane can take the weight of all my shoes..

This post is building off my last one, but aimed at anyone who has suffered the stress of obeying the rules of carry on baggage!

Because I'm going away this week I've been obsessing over what to pack... The high cost of checking in a bag (40 euro!!) combined with the fact that Aerlingus have become even more strict on carry on baggage means I have to be extra careful when deciding how much to bring! Packing my clothes for 6 days (including a wedding) into a tiny suitcase is not easy.. But I think I finally have it worked out, so here are my tips for packing light!

As you decide what to bring, lay it all out on your bed so you can see everything as it builds up.

Decide on a basic colour palette. This may seem over the top but it really helps when deciding what you don't actually need. For example, I'm sticking to navy, grey and red, with a couple of floral things thrown in (don't want to be toooo dark and depressing :P ). It also makes sure you don't bring a collection of clothes that don't go together!

Go through each day of your trip in your head and pack accordingly. Do you really need 10 tank tops for 5 days? I think not.

Don't get bogged down in the 'just in case'! If you are heading somewhere touristy, it is very unlikely that you will be needing 6 different pairs of high heels in varying shades of black. One will do!

With the clothes you've chosen, try to mix and match outfits between them. You should be able to match almost anything, meaning you don't have to pack as many individual items in order to come up with enough outfits!

Ok, shoes... This can be a tough one because shoes can instantly dress up or down an outfit, and you don't want to appear under dressed at a fancy restaurant simply because you only brought trainers! One pair of heels is usually enough, and one pair of walking shoes. I'm bringing a pair of boots as well in case I have to walk around in the rain, and that is it.

Right, so you've chosen everything. Make sure you have a few accessories to go with it (don't over do it though!). One belt should be enough, along with a few necklaces (of varying styles, no need to waste space being redundant).

Finally, see if it fits in your bag! Make sure the bag is within the limits specified by the airline you are flying with, in both size and weight. You can find this information for Aerlingus here and for Ryanair here.

As an example, here's what I'll be packing for 6 days in London :)

1 pair of jeans
1 skirt
1 pair of shorts
2 leotards
3 tank tops
2 large tshirts (to layer over tank tops)
1 pair of black tights
Maxi dress (for the wedding)

That should fit into one tiny suit case right...?

Off on a J1? Or wondering what to wear to that interview?

Ok so you might not be working in exactly this kind of environment (hopefully!)

I'm staying in Ireland to work this summer, but a lot of my friends and I'm sure a large amount of college students are heading off on J1s sometime soon. I'm quite jealous! Anyway, one of my friends is leaving next week for Canada, most likely to work in an office environment so she asked me to put together a capsule wardrobe of work wear to bring with her. I thought other people might benefit from it so here you go! :)

I know a lot of people go away to America or Canada with nothing planned in terms of employment, but you may have some idea before you go. I've based this wardrobe on the likelihood that Sinead will be working in an office for the summer... :)

Shoes: New Look
Dress and cardigan: Mod Cloth
Bag and sleeveless blouse: Jane Norman
Shorts and chinos: Miss Selfridges
Tank tops: New Look
Necklace, skirts and belt: Top Shop
White Blouse: Miss Selfridges

I've chosen clothes that can be mixed and match with each other so you are never stuck for an outfit! This helps when getting ready in a rush as well as saving room in your suitcase. Not only that, some of these pieces can be worn on the weekends or out to dinner too!

A lot of people, when they think of work clothes, think immediately of pinstripe suits and pencil skirts. But just because this is the norm, doesn't mean it's all there is! Especially in interviews, neat but slightly more original dress can set you apart from the rest of the crowd. God knows you aren't the only student out there looking for a job! This way you look put together and sophisticated, but still managing to hold onto your individuality :)

As you can see, the majority of these are high street clothes! There's no need to over pack, there's nothing worse than lugging around a massive suitcase while travelling.. Remember, you will probably buy more stuff when you get there, I know I wouldn't be able to help myself!

Good luck!
